Myths Reimagined - Valkyrie

Hi guys! I’m really excited to participate in this challenge.

For my character, I chose Valkyrie, an otherworldly shield-maiden from Norse mythology. Valkyries were Odin’s messengers, guiding the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla.

In this interpretation, Valkyries are elite units of the Aesir space fleet, belonging to Odin’s personal guard. Genetically modified, heavily armed and enhanced with numerous body augmentations, they serve as the ultimate weapon in the Aesir’s planetary conquests. Descending from the sky, they deliver the final blow and secure the field for the pods sent from orbit to retrieve the bodies of the fallen and take them to the regenerative tanks of the Valhalla ship.

In terms of aesthetics, I’m aiming for a mix of cyberpunk, sci-fi and fantasy. I have gathered some initial reference images; the reference board will probably grow as the work progresses.

I have also made rough sketches of the early design, trying to capture the overall feeling of a character. I will explore these ideas further in the coming days, working towards a (relatively) final concept and the beginning of a 3D blockout.

I am really looking forward to this creative journey and hope to learn a lot along the way. I also can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with. Good luck and have fun!

A paintover of the previous pencil sketch. I wanted to determine the main color scheme and materials, and I’m pretty satisfied with the result. Many elements are still undefined: I am not 100% sure about the helmet, the spear is only a placeholder, the details need to be refined, but I think I’ll gradually figure it out in 3D. I am also considering adding some kind of wings and a shield, but that will probably also happen in the model already.

So, let the modelling begin! In the next update, I hope to present the first blockout.

The blockout phase continues, slowly but steadily:) I added the first draft of wings and thought it would be cool to shape their form using cables coming out of her back. Let me know what you think!

I also started experimenting with the clothes in Marvelous Designer (I’m a total beginner but it’s so much fun!). I was trying to achieve a look of overlapping and braided fabric strips, but I’m not sure if I will continue down this route - we’ll see.

An update from this week. I’ve been working a little bit more on the back and the lower part, but also added the wings on the helmet (not 100% happy with them) and some additional polish here and there. I also added simple materials to see how they read, and made a test render with the skirt experiment from MD.

I’m starting to think I was a little too ambitious about the complexity of the character, given my time limitations, but we’ll see. I’ll do as much as I can :slight_smile:
