“Iara, or ‘Mother of the Waters’, is one of the most celebrated figures in Brazilian folklore, portrayed as a beautiful mermaid with black hair and enchanting eyes who inhabits the rivers of the Amazon. She attracts fishermen and sailors with her irresistible song to the depths of the rivers.
Legend says that Iara was a brave indigenous warrior, envied by her brothers. After defending herself from an assassination attempt by them and killing them, she was punished by her father by being thrown into the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. Fishes saved her, transforming her into a mermaid.
Name meaning: The name Iara comes from the Tupi word iiyara (‘lady of the waters’). She represents the mystery of the waters, feminine strength, and the need to preserve nature.”

Here’s the mood board so far. I really like the amazonian fish colors and textures, definitely gonna use that. Some traditional Tupi-Guarani and sci-fi imagery for inspiration, I love the face painting. I’m not a concept artist, so I’ll have to design directly on 3D, let’s see if I’m up to the task. The final character will be stylized like Valorant or Apex Legends.

I have this base mesh from an old personal project, I’ll start with this.
I dropped a reference image and used it to find the proportions I like, with modeling and sculpting tools.

LOL yeah, gotta go fast! Blender’s modifier system helps a lot! Tons of bevels, solidifys and arrays all over the place
