Myths Reimagined - Gumiho

I’m working on a character concept called “A Cyber Gumiho Who Longs to Become Human.”

The gumiho is a mythological being from Korean folklore, also shared across East Asian mythic traditions. In these myths, the gumiho is a nine-tailed fox that can take human form, captivate human souls, and consume hearts or livers, all while carrying a deep desire to become human.

This project blends traditional Eastern elements—such as hanbok, jade, and a gourd bottle—with the gumiho’s core traits: white fur, nine tails, and the fox bead. These mythic features are reinterpreted through cyber elements like optical fibers and flowing electrical currents, visualizing the absorption of human souls and representing a being that exists in an incomplete, transitional cyber state.

The focus of this design is to find a harmonious balance between Eastern mythological aesthetics, organic fur textures, and futuristic cyber materials, all within the framework of the gumiho myth.

I’m in the middle of concept development.
Mixing different motifs is challenging but also really fun.
I’m still debating the front view a bit, and for the back view I only have a rough sketch so far – I’m planning to add most of mechanical elements there.

I’m stopping for today and will continue tomorrow..
Doing everything myself, from concept to modeling, isn’t easy.
But it feels like it’s going to be a rewarding journey!

Wow.. this is stunning. I can’t wait to see this come to life in 3D

I’ve established the overall layout using large shapes, and I’m now moving into refining the model and working on the hard‑surface elements.

The tail and hair will be handled with card meshes.

It’s not a major update, but I wanted to share the current progress.

Thank you.

The shape language is great! This feels fresh and I can’t wait to see the next update.

I’m working on an engine placed on the back of this Cyber Gumiho.
Traditionally, the creature absorbs human souls through a sacred object called the yeou-guseul (“fox marble”), which I’m using as the motif for the power source.

I’m trying to finalize my concept art.

Since it’s my first time completing a full 3D modeling project, it’s been quite challenging!

+I added some materials and colors in Zbrush.

Hello,

I’m almost finished with the high‑poly sculpt in ZBrush, and before moving on to the low‑poly stage in 3Ds Max, I’m currently doing the decimation pass.

The first image is the initial concept sketch I drew to establish the overall direction.

The second image shows the high‑poly sculpt in ZBrush, where I focused on maintaining a mystical, myth‑inspired atmosphere. I hope the final result stays close to the concept image and preserves the same overall mood.

The third image highlights the mechanical parts on the character’s back—this section functions as the engine that activates the spiritual energy absorbed through the tail.

The last image is a test render from Substance Painter and Marmoset, where I’m checking the texture feel for the tail and the hair cards in advance. Yet the hair cards didn’t unwrap well, so I’m planning to fix all of the card meshes, UVs, and textures.

I’m really hoping I can finish everything on time..!!

I’ll post again once I get into the retopology and texturing stages.

Bye for now!
