Hi!
I would like to join with my take on the Graeae!
Backstory
In Greek mythology, the Graeae (“The Old Women” or “Gray Sisters”) are daughters of the primordial seagods Phorcys and Ceto, and sisters to the Gorgons: Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale. Their names: Deino (“Terrible”), Enyo (“Horror”), and Pemphredo (“Alarm”) reflect their ominous nature.
They were born old, with grey-white hair that glows in the dark. Often described as crone-like, sometimes with swan bodies and women’s heads, they appear pale and haggard, barely visible in shadow. They’re often linked to the sea as marine divinities, possibly as personifications of white sea-foam.
Their defining trait is that they share a single eye and a single tooth, passing them between one another. This shared eye symbolizes concentrated perception, foresight, and a kind of collective consciousness.
The Graeae are not warriors but guardians of forbidden knowledge, dwelling at the edge of the world near Mount Atlas in Libya. Liminal and unsettling, they stand as early precursors to the later archetype of the witch.
Idea
The Graeae are described as ageless, deathless, and divine beings, and it’s easy to imagine them still existing in a sci-fi future. As keepers of forbidden knowledge and foresight, the sisters might function as a watchful ‘big brother,’ monitoring everyone. One of their eyes has been upgraded and enhanced with neural links to the collective.
They’re often seen walking, or hovering, high above the neon-lit streets, always observing, never sleeping…
