Rules for the Myths Reimagined - Real-Time Game Character

FlippedNormals x Huion - Old Myths Gone Futuristic!

In collaboration with Huion, we’re happy to present our latest Game Art Challenge!

Old Myths Gone Futuristic is all about taking legends we already know - gods, monsters, heroes, creatures, ancient rituals - and imagining what they’d look like in a high-tech future. Think cyber-Odin with glowing implants, a robotic Medusa with fiber-optic snakes, or a phoenix reborn as a hologram.

The goal is simple: keep the soul of the original myth, but reimagine it with sci-fi style, advanced tech, and bold futuristic worldbuilding.

Rules

  • Use any software that you like for modeling and texturing.
  • Create 1 real-time 3D character with no paintovers. The character has to be rendered in a real-time engine such as Unity, Marmoset Toolbag, UE, Godot, etc.
  • Max poly/tri-count of 150K for the whole character.
  • You’re allowed to use two 4K map sets.
  • You will need to show the final textures created for your character as flat renders.
  • While you can’t do any paintovers on your character, you are allowed to do final grading. Adding background and foreground elements such as dust, sparks, or anything else that adds to your presentation, has to be present in the final 3D scene on planes. These count towards your final polycount as well.
  • Keep an active WIP thread of your progress.
  • No generative AI allowed at any stages, including the use of AI concept art.
  • You’re allowed to use a generic base mesh.
  • Note that we’re unable to give out prizes to participants in the following countries due to international sanctions and banking banking restrictions:
Afghanistan, American Samoa, Belarus, Cuba, Fiji, Guam, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Libya, Palau, Panama, Russia, Samoa, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Trinidad & Tobago, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Virgin Islands, Yemen.

Character Final Submission

Post your final submission in the Final Submissions Thread for Characters

  • 1 final shot of your character in a real-time viewer/engine - 1920px+ on the longest edge.
  • Front, side and back views of your character in a real-time viewer/engine - 1920px+ on the longest edge.
  • Wireframe shots and a texture overview + any additional shots you wish to include
  • Link to an active WIP thread showing progress

Judging Criteria

Your work will be judged based on a number of different criteria:

  • The technical execution, the final aesthetics of the image - as well as your own creative flair.
  • Are you able to tell a story with your character?
  • Does it evoke emotion? Think about the presentation, as well as the back story of the piece - and other defining characteristics you can display through the finished character.
  • Your progression as an artist! We’re not simply looking for the best final result, but also at the progression you make throughout the project and how you react to feedback.

Feedback and Sharing

We love to see the community thrive and grow and we highly encourage commenting on other people’s work - giving feedback and constantly pushing each other to become better artists.

To share your WIP and final submission you can do so by creating an account on our challenge page HERE upon which you can navigate to our challenge, create a new topic and start sharing away!

Hello there!
One question about the use of concept images to create the character.
We are allowed to use somebody else’s concept art or everything should come from our imagination?
Thank you!

I just asked this question on the discord and Henning told me its okay as long as you have permission to use it from the original artist. You can check the “challenge-discussion” channel on the flipped normals discord to see the full message if needed.

Thank you for the headsup!

Are we allowed to start from basemeshes ?

Yes you are allowed to start from a basemesh. But make sure to use one that’s generic enough that we don’t see the personality of the original basemesh shine through. I’m saying this because some basemeshes come with lots of detail and personality - so they’re almost finished characters already.

Lmk if this makes sense

You can use somebody else’s concept art as long as you have full permission from them to do so

Yeah that makes sense, thank you

Just a quick question are we aloud to render in Maya Arnold?

Thanks in advance.

You’ll need to present your character in a real-time engine or viewer so Unity, Godot, Unreal Engine, Marmoset Toolbar, Sketchfab viewer etc.

Blender EEVEE is ok to render in?

I have a question regarding the above point:

Namely, can our final presentation include, for example, a model of a rock (included in the 150k tris, of course), and do the textures for this rock have to be included in the two permitted texture sets, or can they be separate, since they are not ultimately textures for the character?

Yes! It’s okay to render in EEVEE

The two textures is for the character, environment is separate. It’s not a huge concern what the environment is tbh, considering thats a bonus and you will be judged on your character

Thanks a lot.

Hey, sorry if it’s been asked, but is it okay to have 1 4k texture and 2 2k ones for example?

“You’re allowed to use two 4K map sets.” So as long as you are in the texture budget I guess it’s okay. You can reach 1 4kmap and 4 2kmap if you want

Hey, I asked this on discord and they said as long as it does not exceed 2x 4k,you can break it down to smaller sets
