Myths Reimagined - Æsir Battalion

Hello Ladies and gentlemen! It’s my first time here. I hope to create something that stands out while following the rules.
My idea is very simple: “Vikings - Flying”.
I asked myself, “If the Vikings were skilled navigators… their Gods couldn’t be any less!”

And here’s my idea. Combining science fiction technology and the divine instruments of Norse mythology to create a Viking-style battle “spaceship.” Obviously, a divine vessel can’t copy human inventions, so the ship’s shape will have to be something very different. I’ll try to respect as many points of Norse folklore as possible.

I’ll upload a moodboard with references in the next few days !
(For those who don’t know, the Æsir are a group of deities. They will provide the main objects needed to building the ship. Ofcourse together with me and the dwarves xD)

Update
Yesterday I finally started working on my project. Today I spent most of the day refining the blockout, making sure the overall scale and proportions are solid, and double-checking that the scope is manageable so I can finish everything on time while respecting the contest rules.

Every part of this structure is meant to be a small reference to Norse mythology, with a strong focus on Ragnarök – a moment known not only as the end, but also as a new beginning. Interpreting this concept for the contest, every tool and artifact recovered from the battlefield by the survivors is reused in the new era as a technological component.

In this update I’m sharing the main references that inspired the different parts of the vessel. Among them, there’s also a quick Photoshop paintover representing a rough interpretation of the final result, along with a fast shot showing the overall composition.

Now that the base blockout is done, I can better evaluate all the rules and constraints, which means coming to terms with a few necessary compromises – both because of time and polycount limitations. The goal is still to fully realize every major element of the concept, including the giant. :flexed_biceps:

Next up (for those still reading  ), I’ll start refining the hero assets — the three main buildings — and begin working on the trim sheets.

This looks exciting! Can’t wait to follow along

It’s been quite some time since I started, and I’m currently trying to catch up on lost time. For this project, I’m approaching things a bit differently compared to my usual workflow.

Since the environment will be fairly large, I decided to spend some time building and testing versatile trim sheets in order to optimize the scene as much as possible. At this stage, most of the UV work is done, along with the simpler sci-fi style textures for the background elements.

The modeling phase is essentially complete, as I’m planning to add most of the smaller details through textures rather than geometry.

I’m still considering whether to reduce the number of hero assets to a single main building instead of three — which I believe might be the better choice given the constraints.

At this point, the next step is to finalize and apply all the textures and bring everything into Unreal to start assembling the full environment.

Reminder that there are only 5 days left of the challenge  Remember to post your final results here before the deadline is up: Myths Reimagined - Real-Time Game Environment: Final Submissions

Today I finally finished everything and I’m ready to submit. I’m sorry I didn’t post more updates, but as time started running out I had to focus on finishing the project.

Like I mentioned before, small spoiler: I had to reduce the main buildings from three to one so I could give it more definition and detail. With the triangles I had left, I added as many details as possible while still trying to keep everything optimized.

Overall I’m pretty happy with the result regardless of how it performs. I managed to accomplish almost everything I originally set out to do. I’m especially glad I finally made something about Vikings. I hope my vision of Ragnarök will be appreciated. After all, Ragnarök isn’t just the end of everything, it’s also a new beginning.

See you tomorrow for the submission

The work is finished and submitted. Thanks again for the support.

I just realized that one of the wireframes I submitted (the one of the giant) came out a bit blurry, and it looks like the face has millions of polygons , but that’s not actually the case… How embarrassing.

I’m also sorry that I couldn’t show the video of the environment in-engine right away (which, by the way, is probably the best part of the project). Unfortunately, I made a miscalculation and today I don’t have the video with me to upload it. But I’ll upload it very soon, and I hope you’ll be able to see it sooner or later.

Alright, see you next time!
